My steering is starting to get tight so I want to replace the cable. Does anyone know what length the cable is? Malibu has a chart that says that the 21VLX is 19 ft and the 23LSV is 20 ft so I am assuming it is one of those but I want to make sure I get the right one the first time.

First you should take the cable off the rudder and check to see if it Is really the cable and not the rudder box itself, some people have had the non-serviceable rudder box seize up, better to change that than the wrong part

The factory cable length and part number is the Teleflex SSC15419 (19 ft). I replaced mine with the SSC15420 (20 ft) so that I could fit a larger subwoofer box under the helm. My cable was fine but my rudder box bushing is worn and so I am exploring options such as replacing with serviceable rudder box or replacing OEM bearing (fiber PTFE sleeve bearing) with a higher quality water lubricated bearing.

My steering is tight and I've determined it is the cable. Does anyone with experience replacing this part care to offer advice? I'm trying to decide if I want to tackle this project on my own. The original poster mentioned using a longer cable, does anyone see any negative impacts this could have? I'd rather have a cable too long, than come up short.

Could just be bad steering cable routing. I re-routed my 2016 A24 steering cable before the boat even hit the water.

What areas did you re-route? I did have "one finger" steering, but recently it became a workout. My new 20' cable should arrive today and I hope to install it soon.

I installed the new 20' cable over the weekend. It took me a bit longer than it would've taken a mechanic, but that's to be expected. A suggestion for anyone doing this is to not go crazy taping the new cable to the old (only tape above the nut). Also, be careful not to catch any wires while pulling the new cable through.

What's your boats year and make? Also do you have a part number for the cable?

It's a 2012 A22 and I ordered the teleflex SSC15420. The original cable was a SSC15419.
