I am looking for a way to connect 2 USB cables to the Sony head unit of my 2014 A22. I know they can't be used at the same time, but that's not what I want.
I want to connect a USB-Lightning cable that connects to a permanently mounted phone cradle and would like to have another USB cable with a female port to connect any device.
So once again not using both cables at the same time but have both connected to the radio.
The radio manual says it can't read devices connected to a USB hub. Has anyone tried nevertheless? Or do you have another good idea how the realize that?

Not sure if a "Splitter" exists for USB. you probably have to just make your own. Not sure what happens if you connect both devices at the same time, hopefully it would not fry anything but beware.

USB Splitter mostly brings up devices that allow sharing of one device between 2 computers. That's not what I want because it's "the wrong direction". There are some cables that look like USB Y-cables. However they all include some electronics which essentially makes them a hub. I was hoping there's an aftermarket solution for this problem but it really seems like I would have to wire it up on my own.

Has anybody tried using a hub (only 1 device at a time)?

Making the cable yourself shouldn't be too difficult. I would buy two cords off of amazon for cheap and just splice them together. I am sure there is a youtube tutorial out there.

That's a hub with electronics as well. Probably won't work. But your idea with the youtube tutorial was great!
I will do it almost like shown here, but I will connect all cables.

I will let you guys know if it worked but it will take a while as I get my boat in march.

Thanks for your help! If anyone has experience using an ordinary hub please let me know!

Stefan

A USB splitter is the way to go. Try buying a good one at a store where you can return it if it does not work. A lot of splitters require AC power so check them out for no AC power. I do not think that the radio has the ability to know which USB port is on. In other words, it may think the splitter is the source versus the other items connected to the splitter.

I have a "splitter" and if I connect more than one devices to it. They dont charge as they are not getting enough power.

Just wanted to post a follow-up here.
In the meNtime I got my boat and I was able to make it work.
I purchased two USB cables from Amazon, cut them in the middle and soldered them together. It is important that you also connect the shielding around the cables. The cable does NOT work with a computer, but it works with the Sony Stereo without a problem. Now I have one USB plug in the little compartment below the throttle and one cable permanently attached to my phone cradle on the windshield. The only thing you have to remember is never to plug devices in both cables at once (haven't tried it, but I guess the outcome won't be too good)
