I think it's a case of a lot of people don't know the feature is there and those if us with older boats don't have it.

Open up the head unit manual and read about it.

Manual is borderline useless....and messing with it yields no results. Not that it's all that important but my OCD doesn't allow me to let things like this go.

I'll put a call I to Malibu/axis and see what I can figure out next week since this thread revival made me think about it again!

Bumping this. Mine was working perfectly. The radio went out, I got another Sony unit while I was waiting on warranty on mine. It stopped working. It's a different head unit so figured it was just that. Got the new radio back in from Axis and it still doesn't work. Any ideas? It's still active in the guage cluster.

Mine works great. But maybe I like it to do things others do not. It is triggered by changes in RPM.Generally I set the volume when someone is surfing or wakeboarding. Then when I go back for the rider, and idle past, it is very quiet for talking to, instructing, or ridiculing the person in the water. As soon as I throttle up again, the sound comes back to life.

One thing I did modify about my stereo setup is I changed the "amp enable" wire for the tower speakers' amp from the SUB connection on the head unit to the spare AUX toggle switch on the left side of the dash board. This allows me to pull away from the beach with the stereo on, but not wake up the neighbors. After I am away from shore, rope out, engine at temp, etc, I can flip the loud noise on and enjoy the tunes along with my rider.
