So I've got an '11 a20 and the water temp sensor keeps reading 32* no matter what the temp actually is. It started reading incorrectly early last summer. Now that springs around the corner id like to try and fix it. Anyone else have this problem or could someone point me in the right direction? Thanx

I would try to reset the display and see if that works.

Thanx I'll give it a try. Hope my owners manual will take me through how to perform the reset

I would assume it works like a car, but I am assuming. This will not reset the gauge, but it will test the actual circuit. Turn the key on so the gauge is active. Unplug the temp sensor, the gauge should go either full max hot or full min cold. Then take a jumper wire or piece of wire (even a paper clip and short the wire you removed from the sensor it should do the exact opposite of the previous step. If that is the case you have a defective temp sensor. If not you have a problem in the circuit or gauge.

For step two: If the temp sensor has one wire short it against the block or any bare metal nearby attached to the engine. If its a two wire connector short the two pins together. Also be aware that they may use two sensors, one for the electronic fuel injection system and one dedicated solely for the gauge. Most have two.

Note: Again, I'm assuming this works like a car.

I think it's part of the depth finder transducer, so shorting the signal wire to ground would require knowing which wire to use first.

Actually the temp sensor should be part of the paddle wheel.

OOps! my bad. I thought you were talking about engine temp not lake temp. I've seen the water temp sensor in the paddle wheel on a couple boats as well. I would suggest disconnecting the connector from the paddle wheel or depth finder to see if you have max. or min. movement on the gauge. I would hold off on shorting the wire unless you can verify proper wire color. Just unplugging it may give you at least half your answer without any damage to circuits.

Do a reset before you take it to a dealer. Or decide if it is even worth it. Sometimes it is better not to know the water temp.

If you need to replace the paddle wheel/water temp sensor, it is super easy. Open the access to your v-drive compartment to get to it. The paddle wheel has a ring the screws off, then you can pull the unit out. Follow the wire to the engine compartment and disconnect. Reverse the directions to put new one back in. Part is about $100. Once you have the part, the whole thing takes 5 minutes and no tools.
