I guess my big question is am I just gonna have to experiment will different boards or is there one special board I can buy that I will always like, or am I gonna have to nickle up and have a few boards?

You'll go through a couple or a few thousand dollars before you settle on a board you like...probably a few thousand. You'll need to decide also what style you like either surf or skim but laty there's also hybrid boards being made that are not truly surf and not truly skim. Your first board can be a CWB Ride or a Hyperlite Broadcast. Both are durable and great boat boards for the last 7-8 years. Sure you'll get tired of it after about a month because they are slow and not made for carving but you can still spin them with effort. For beginner and cheap skim get either the Liquid Force Doum or Slingshot Bender. I've ridden the Doum skim and its a good skimmer but it obviously won't compare to a Phase 5 or a Victoria PCX Factor. Some boards will also made to be ridden with more weight on the front foot (skim) and some with weight on the back (surf) so you'll have to experiment with your weighting and your stance. Proper sizing of the board is critical to get the most out it as well. You might not like a board you just purchased but it might be that you just chose the wrong size. Fins make a difference as well. Unless you buy something from Shred Stixx, Chaos, Soulcraft, or Doomswell as a surf style board you'll need to buy aftermarket fins. A beginner surf or skim will cost between $275-$400. A top of the line handmade custom board that you call and order will cost $600-$1000. Demo as many boards as you can especially if you have friends with boards or meet someone on the water willing to let you try theirs out. Wakeboards and wakesurf boards are kind of like golf clubs, you either like it or you don't, it either feels good to you or it doesn't.

I suggest staying away from the hyperlite broadcast. I think you would like the LF Doum, Byerly Volt, SS Skim Bender, and Hyperlite Shim. The Shim looks very interesting. I know some of the ones I mention are single fin, you might want to get a tri-fin so you can play around with the fin configure to what you like the best. Pretty much everything AJ mentioned above is true. I am on my 4th board with the Slingshot Skim Bender. I don't surf a ton but I find it fun and I usually just goof off. My gf loves it. I bought her a Triple X Composite K. I think they run around $350 or so. It is a very light board but it is fragile too so I don't suggest it as your first board.

My first board was a Hyperlite Broadcast. I didn't even learn to ride it before I sold it. I thought it was that bad. I also have an Inland Surfer Mucus. It is a surf style board. It feels fast down the line to me which is fun. Let us know what you go with.

I always suggest a community wakesurf board. I suggest a CWB ride, Tsunami, HL or Ronix entry level board. One that will not dent when a new riders misses the handle or drives it up the back of the boat because he could not brake. :) If you have a boat you will have new riders at some point so a $349 and under surf board is a good buy. then I suggest something for yourself. After you get the hang of the entry level community board go buy yourself an upgraded board. I have been on surf only and wakeboard company made surfboards. I have been on all the Inland and ShredStixx boards and I have actually had some good luck with the Ronix thruster. Not a bad little board from a wakeboard company. So not all Wakeboard companies have bad boards.

I do like the Inland stuff. For big guys the red rocket has been a solid board. I like the Sweet Spot Pro. A little small on me at 190-195lbs but I still prefer to ride that board. the swallow is a great board for me also. I am interested in riding some of the Phase 5 stuff that we just got in. I am afraid that it will all sell out before I can get my hands on any of them. Now that they have a few surf style shapes I an really wanting to get some of them out on the water.

Heard that Phase 5 Aku is legit. I do like the Inland Flyboy. Easiest board to gain speed. All you need is one pump.

I bought a CWB Ride from evo.com over the winter in anticipation of buying a boat and learning to surf. It was on sale w/ a surf rope for $175. I figured what the hell, I'd try and learn on it and worst case it would make for a good boat surf board to teach friends/kids on since I see the nice ones easily reach $1000. I've never done it before and am a bigger guy but for the money I thought it was worth a shot.

Keep an eye out for sales on evo.com website, they have good prices from what I've seen.

Be sure to post back after trying some, I'm excited to learn to surf and will probably try many boards as well.

Find a local shop that demos boards you can try. We have one on Lake Anna and while the one we might like isn't always available, one quite similar can be.
