I now have a serviceable rudder box with 2 zerk fittings and my steering is better than when it was brand new. I think I wrote up a thread about this… i will look.

Would you mind letting us know where you got the rudder box and what it runs? I am looking to swap mine out. T22 steering is getting very difficult.

Thanks.

So as a follow-up to my steering being super stiff... rudder box siezed. Only 90 hours on the boat (2014 T22). I would say it was failed at about 60 hours, but I put up with it so I could get through summer.

My dealer replaced the non-servicable Axis version with the Malibu box with zerk fittings. I was very happy about this.

I think its pathetic that we are getting less than 2 seasons with these. Reading through these posts makes it sound very common that the stock rudder boxes are junk.

Wait what? I have been complaining about mine since new. 2014 T22 with about 90 hours. I always thought it was excessively heavy from the start and listening to this makes me wish I had the dealer address it earlier.

Quick, get to your dealer before you are out of warranty!! Make sure to request that they replace it with the zerk style.

Mine was pretty smooth at first and just kept degrading.

Yes, glad to hear you got it figured out. I had a hunch it was the box just like mine. Now my steering is so smooth, and it only takes a couple minutes to service/lube the new one. I did not see your earlier question before you got it handled, but my dealer had a vlx box laying around and just handed it to me (I already had the old one out) so I installed it myself that day. What a difference.

:) I am looking forward to using it next spring. The steering was seriously taking the fun out of it.

I fought with the steering issue for 2 seasons before I figured out it was the rudder box. Man what a difference it made!

Rudder box failure is fairly common in Axis as far as any failures go with parts. Used to be common with Malibu boats as well, lots of old threads in the Malibu forum on the rudder box topic.

Is this something that has been fixed? I just ordered a 2016 A20. I guess with the new 5 yr warranty I shouldn't worry to much.

It is a problem for some. Most don't have the issue. I wouldn't worry about it with a 2016.
