I have the pleasure of owning a 2015 A22 w/o surfgate . I can tell you that the boat listed with 1100 bag as full as I can get it and the other side empty and all combinations in between do not do very well. Wake is there and you can hang in the pocket but it very sensitive to just about everything and will randomly lose push.

That being said, I built a DIY suckgate and stuck it on the side and its night and day. I just fill all of the tanks/pnp bags in the boat, throw a 500 in the middle of the front seat and stick the suckgate on the side. Put it on plane and drop weight out of the opposite side until it cleans up which is normally about a minute. Regular to goofy switch takes about 3 minutes. Really can't recommend this DIY (or buying a Delta) enough for non-surfgate guys.

Also surfed my old 2002 Supra Launch SSV a good bit. First thing I ever surfed so I was satisfied at the time but always taking rollers over the bow.

Who bought a 2015 A22 without surfgate?

I rode the new X30 yesterday but it really needed more weight. We only had 2 people in the boat so next time out I'm going to bring a couple extra 400 bags. I will say that I could see the potential of a really good wave. It still had decent push, enough to drop the rope and have some fun, but you really had to work to stay in the pocket.

I like these type of opinions. I know we all have a slight "Axis/Malibu" lean but I like to hear about the push other boats have. If they have a great lip, say it. I still feel like a lot of people hasn't tested and understood their own boats and they can improve their wave with a day on the water of trials with different weight configurations.

Here is our 16 A20. I know it's not the monster wave coming off the 22-23 footers but we had a blast this last weekend. 750 in each rear locker, all pnp full with extra 650 bow bag on the cushions, wedge deployed plus 5 adults in the boat 10.6 mph. Couldn't go to the 22/23/24 because of garage reasons however if you have a general idea of how to surf and the right board any Axis will get the job done.

Full disclosure my next boat will be the T23 but I just need a place to keep it full time so it may be a few years. I saw a T23 with 6,000 lbs of ballast on here somewhere and the wave was insane. You could easily ride 3 people deep at one time with the picture I saw.

Outside of myself, the previous owner who picked the options. For me it translated into about $10K less than similar boats with the gate.

But when I see a surfgate problems thread and everyone is chiming in about their issues I like my suction cups. ha

My bias is AWAY from a wave with a steep face, but I do like a defined lip. I also like a LOOOOOOOOOONG wave, so we always surf at 11.6+ (12.5 regularly on my old boat).

My rankings:

1. MB TWB 23 (2012) -- rode at polar bear in fall 2013. Boat was LOADED with weight. Biggest longest meatiest wave I've ridden.
2. MB TWB 23 (2011) -- my old boat. We didn't run as much weight but it still made a GREAT wake.
3. T22 (2016) -- early days and haven't tried to sink it yet but so far really liking the wave.
4. 23 LSV (2014) -- last year's boat. very similar wave to the T22 but the regular side was more rolled over than lippy. I guess I do miss the surfgate horn (a lot!).
5. Tige 21v -- at polar bear. Definitely weighted and it's a tiny boat, but the wave was GREAT!
6. (tie) Tige Z1/Z3 -- very similar waves. A bit steep (wall) for me. I've gotten better since I rode these in 2013, so maybe I'd like them more now?
7. 2011 Malibu LSV (listed/goofy) -- great surfable wave, just not as big as some of the others. definitely not a ton of height. Great skim wave?
8. Supreme 238. wave was real real short and tall. I think they were haveing weighting issues. Bow rise in that boat was insane.
9. Malibu vride (2006). My first boat. Took lots or work to weight and the wave never got very long. Not much push either. And very little freeboard. I miss this boat at the gas station but that's about it.

Rode behind a G23 today. Water was super choppy because it was at a big event with other surf demos going on. The wave was awesome. I have been struggling to do airs on my A22 with DIY gate but now I'm thinking my troubles are because my wave is too flat. The platform knocks down the lip. In the terrible conditions I popped an air like it was nothing.

I know you surf a lot so I am not surprised by your list. I wished tige was bigger around here in Malibu country. If you get a chance, I would love to hear your opinion of the x20 or x23. Both are awesome waves in my opinion.
